Linux Scheduler Performance for Beowulf Compute Nodes

چکیده
In the last decade, the use of the Beowulf Cluster concept for High Performance Computing and Cloud Computing has exploded. In addition, the Linux operating system used by many of these computing platforms has also greatly advanced. Understanding the effects of the underlying kernel scheduler on the computational performance of compute nodes is one of the main concerns in customizing a Linux operating system. The overlying batch scheduling, message passing, and network communications are highly affected by subtle changes in kernel scheduler customizations. In this paper, we explore the computational performance of two types of Beowulf compute nodes, one using the O(1) scheduler and one using the new Completely Fair Scheduler, in various types of operating modes to determine an optimum scheduler and configuration.

Load Balancing Approach Based on Limitations and Bottlenecks of Multi-core Architectures on a Beowulf Cluster Compute-Node
This paper studies the improvement of performance and execution time of a single compute-node in a Beowulf cluster. We want to implement a load balancing approach through the Linux scheduler which improves the performance and execution time of High Performance Linpack (HPL) benchmark. We compare the performance and execution time when spawning processes for two processing cores in a local proce...
متن کاملLinux Kernel Improvement: Toward Dynamic Power Management of Beowulf Clusters
As a cost-effective alternative to large supercomputers, Beowulf clusters are now deployed worldwide to support scientific computing. While Beowulf clusters yield high computing performance, they also pose several challenges: 1) Heat induced hardware failure makes large scale commodity clusters fail quite frequently, 2) Powering all the computer nodes without adapting to the varying work load m...

The advent of open source software leading to Beowulf clusters has enabled small to medium sized Higher and Further education institutions to remove the “computational power” factor from research ventures. In an effort to catch up with leading Universities in the realm of research, many Universities are investing in small departmental HPC clusters to help with simulations, renders and calculati...

This paper presents the parallelization of a sequential noise reduction algorithm for seismic data processing into a parallel algorithm. The parallel algorithm was developed using C language with the utilization of the Message Passing Interface (MPI) library. The proposed algorithm has been implemented on an experimental Beowulf cluster which consists of 12 nodes operating on Linux Ubuntu platf...
